After the end of World War II, the once vibrant metropolis of Tokyo lay in ruins, desolate and bleak. In the Long House Street, home to impoverished citizens, those who managed to survive began to rebuild their lives with their hardworking hands, united in their hopes for a better future. One day, Taniguchi brought back a boy named Kohei (played by Aoki Hōppi). Kohei's parents had died in the war, leaving him alone and destitute, living on borrowed time. Although kind-hearted people sympathized with Kohei's plight, maintaining their own livelihoods was already a struggle, let alone taking on another mouth to feed. After much deliberation, Taniguchi decided to entrust Kohei to the shopkeeper, Ayin (played by Iida Chōko). However, due to her own painful experiences, Ayin initially displayed rejection and aversion toward the child. Yet, as time passed, her inherent maternal tenderness slowly began to awaken… This film is Yasujirō Ozu's first work made after World War II.
