High school girl Mari Katsuragi (played by Tomoyo Harada) remembers when she was 5 years old, her father (played by Yukihiro Takahashi) described to her a beautiful small island in the South Pacific, New Caledonia, which he said was the place closest to paradise. The local people live happily and carefree, as if they are living in a wonderland. After her father's death, Mari cannot forget the promise to visit New Caledonia with him. She bids farewell to her mother (played by Kayo Matsuo) and sets off on a journey to Australia alone. After a few days of travel, Mari finds that New Caledonia is not the island she had imagined. She then explores Ile des Pins with a fake tour guide (played by Toru Minegishi) and visits Uvea Island with a third-generation Japanese youth Taro Watanabe (played by Ryoichi Takayanagi), but it seems far from the "island closest to paradise" her father spoke of. Mari's time there is also running out... This film is based on the novel of the same name by Kei Morimura.
