The first science fiction film to utilize miniaturization technology for filming inside the human body, and also the predecessor of "Fantastic Journey". The story describes a Soviet scientist who escapes from the screen to America, as his brain vessels are sabotaged by spies and his life is in jeopardy. Five American doctors are miniaturized to a fraction of a millionth and placed on film, then injected into the scientist's body to perform vascular surgery. The film's concept is innovative, opening new horizons for the science fiction genre. The visual effects of the internal human landscape are somewhat derivative, but unfortunately, the movie special effects of the 1960s were not yet sophisticated enough, which may seem laughable to today's audience; however, it does not detract from the film's rich entertainment value. Director Richard Fleischer tells the story smoothly and has won two Academy Awards for Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects.
