In the year 814 during the European Middle Ages, in a typical German family. Due to the societal discrimination and various restrictions faced by women at that time, Johanna (played by Johanna Wokalek) grew up under her cleric father's preference for sons. Despite her father's opposition, the intelligent and eager-to-learn Johanna received careful instruction from a Greek cleric, mastering Latin and Greek. As Johanna grew up, she fell in love with Count Gerold (played by David Wenham). Soon, war broke out, and Gerold went off to the front lines. After a narrow escape, Johanna, using her exceptional courage and wisdom, disguised herself as a man to take her deceased brother's place in a monastery, where she practiced medicine to help the poor. Quickly, Johanna earned the trust of the Pope with her remarkable medical skills, but soon became embroiled in a dangerous whirlpool of political and religious intrigue. Amid a series of struggles for political power, Johanna finally ascended to the highest position in the papacy, becoming a revered Pope. She concealed her female identity while ruling the Catholic Church for two years, until she was ousted due to a pregnancy resulting from a passionate romance. Directed by renowned German filmmaker S?nke Wortmann, the film "Pope Joan" is adapted from Donna Woolfolk Cross's bestselling novel of the same name. This film merges themes of gender and religion, presenting the chilling and enigmatic story of this papal mystery, long buried for over a thousand years, to the audience.
