Suroku (played by Hiroyuki Sanada) was five years old when his father left home, abandoning young Suroku and his mother. He never knew what his father looked like and grew up living under the roof of others in the Katada family in Joshu. After his mother's death, Suroku decided to venture out into the world, with Edo being his first destination. However, there he lived a life of idleness, until one day, he found himself inadvertently embroiled in a dispute and for reasons unknown, sought revenge for someone else. While he was baffled by the turn of events, some greeted him, some bowed to him, and others gave him money. It seemed he had become a hero; when had the inherently lonely Suroku ever received such treatment? He was somewhat taken aback and became unable to forget this thrill, getting addicted to avenging others. Thus, he began wandering around, avenging for people here and there, and seven years passed in the blink of an eye.
After seven years of a wandering life, Suroku had earned 15 ryo of gold. He was physically and mentally exhausted, but still thought of returning home to build a proper grave for his mother. When he finally returned to his hometown, he felt a familiar warmth, yet he sensed a strange atmosphere, as if the entire village were shrouded in a mysterious air. Fate played a trick on him, and once again, Suroku found himself caught up in a quest for revenge against his own father. In the village, he met Taro (played by Yuho Murata), who had grown up with him. Now Taro was a station official and informed Suroku that a revenge operation was about to take place in the village against Katakura Umetaro (played by Tatsuya Nakadai), a former official who had killed his colleague seven years ago. Hearing this, Suroku's spirits lifted, and he immediately applied to join Taro. Taro gladly agreed, and Suroku took the chance to visit his mother's grave, where he found unknown chrysanthemums arranged around it, leaving him feeling somewhat melancholic.
Upon returning from the graveyard to the village, Taro invited Suroku to a small tavern where several other avengers awaited them as previously arranged. After thorough planning, they hurriedly dispersed. Suroku felt a little dazed, and what unsettled him was the woman silently watching him from the second floor of the tavern—he knew she was Taro’s sister, Sen (played by Kyoko Reizei). As he walked to the coffin shop where they used to play as children, Suroku encountered his father, Katakura. Katakura advised Suroku, but he merely felt that this person seemed familiar from the past and paid no further attention. The elderly owner of the coffin shop seemed to know the truth, but at that moment, the deputy sheriff of the Kanto Eight Prefectures, Shigebuka Kanbara (played by Kazunori Ishida), arrived, and Katakura quietly placed a bunch of chrysanthemums in the coffin prepared for himself before slowly lying down……
