The story takes place in Spain in 1080, at a time when the country was not unified, but divided into three small nations that did not interfere with each other's political affairs. Luligo (played by Charlton Heston) becomes the target of King Castile's wrath after secretly letting go of a Moorish chief whom the king had ordered to be executed. In an unfortunate incident, Luligo accidentally kills the father of his fiancée Jimena (played by Sophia Loren), causing a rift in their relationship. Shortly thereafter, Luligo's country is invaded by a foreign nation, and he rises to defend his homeland, eventually repelling the enemy. However, calamity strikes again as the death of King Castile ignites a power struggle between the two princes, Alfonso (played by John Fraser) and Sancho (played by Gary Raymond), once again disrupting the hard-won peace.
