Karen (played by Harriet Andersson), who inherited her mother's mental illness, is sent to a small island for recuperation by her writer father, David (played by Gunnar Björnstrand), after hospitalization. Karen's boyfriend, Martin (played by Max von Sydow), is a doctor, and their relationship is currently at a low point, but Martin believes there is hope for Karen's recovery. Her talented younger brother, Minas, appears somewhat anxious during his adolescence. The four of them are recuperating on the secluded island, but their individual worries seem to be slowly growing. Karen discovers that her father's cold observation of her condition leads to a brief emotional outburst. The next morning, Martin and David leave on a small boat, and left behind, Karen begins to immerse herself in meditation and shows aggression towards Minas. Before the two return to the island, Karen collapses in an old wooden boat and declares to her brother that she has heard the voice of God... This film is the first part of Bergman's "Silence of God" trilogy and won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1962.
