The story takes place in a brothel in New Orleans, just before World War I, during a time of upheaval and unrest. Yet, in this brothel, everything continues to proceed in an orderly manner, as usual. Twelve-year-old Violet (Brooke Shields) lives with her mother, Heidi (Susan Sarandon), and her younger brother, and the only big event in her life recently is the impending auction of her virginity. As the brothel’s official photographer, Bellocq (Keith Carradine) seems out of place in the open environment, always focusing his gaze on the young and beautiful Violet. Soon after, Heidi gets involved with a wealthy man and leaves the brothel with her son, abandoning Violet. When Violet finds herself at a dead end, Bellocq takes her in, and they begin living together. However, Violet's peculiar personality becomes unbearable for Bellocq, leading to their eventual breakup. Unbeknownst to them, this is only the beginning of their long emotional entanglement.
