After the death of Nicholas Nickleby’s (played by Charlie Hunnam) father, the family loses its financial support. He, along with his mother and sister, move to London to rely on their uncle Ralph, who is a mercenary man focused solely on profit and aims to extract as much benefit as possible from Nicholas. Consequently, Nicholas is sent to the school of his uncle's friend, Wackford Squeers (played by Jim Broadbent), where the children are abused by the Squeers couple. In anger, Nicholas teaches Wackford a lesson and leaves with the most pitiable child, Smike (played by Jamie Bell). Along the way, they receive help from kind-hearted individuals. Learning that his sister Kate is in danger of having her reputation ruined due to their uncle's actions, Nicholas severes ties with Ralph upon returning to London. Fortunately, he gains the recognition of the Cheeryble brothers and secures a well-paying job. Unfortunately, Smike, who has been with him for a long time, falls ill and passes away. Ralph, unwilling to be defied, secretly plots to bring Nicholas down, but one of Ralph's assistants stands up for Nicholas and gives him a heads-up. Nicholas falls in love at first sight with the beautiful Madeline (played by Anne Hathaway), and Ralph tries to sabotage their relationship. At this time, Ralph is facing bankruptcy and uncovers a long-held secret from Nicholas...
