In the early Republic era, the remote northern town of Gulu Town has been troubled by a mysterious disease known as 'Skull Disease' for the past twenty years. The afflicted exhibit strange behaviors, are plagued by hallucinations, and have an aversion to food and a craving for water. The patients are all emaciated and dispirited, leading the surrounding villagers to jokingly refer to Gulu Town as 'Bone Town.' In recent years, new troubles have arisen; five years ago, a mysterious beast known as 'Black Bear' began to appear in the nearby hazel forest, often disturbing the townspeople, adding to the woes of Bone Town. In Bone Town, a girl named Sangeng has been learning hunting skills from her master, Sun Laohai, since childhood, and has mastered exceptional archery. However, five years ago, when Black Bear suddenly appeared, Sun Laohai was killed while hunting it. Consequently, Sangeng vowed to dedicate her life to hunting Black Bear, often wandering in the nearby hazel forest in search of its trail. One night, a wandering doctor named Bai Xiaobai encountered Black Bear while passing through the hazel forest outside Bone Town. Fortunately, Sangeng arrived just in time to save him. To her surprise, she discovered that Black Bear was inexplicably afraid of the medicines in Bai Xiaobai's medical kit. However, when she inquired about it, Bai Xiaobai himself was unaware of the reason. To uncover the truth, Sangeng forcefully took Bai Xiaobai back to Bone Town to try to solve the mystery.
