In the early 1970s, political prisoner Lu Yanshi (Chen Daoming) has been cut off from his family for many years. During a transfer at a farm, he escapes and returns home. This brings immense pressure to his daughter Dandan (Zhang Huiwen), who dreams of being a ballet dancer, as she prevents her mother Feng Wanyu (Gong Li) from seeing her father. Thus, the couple is close yet worlds apart. After the end of the Cultural Revolution, Lu Yanshi is finally exonerated and returns home, only to find that his daughter has long since given up her ballet dreams and become a factory worker, while his beloved wife, due to illness, no longer recognizes him. Deep emotions and life-changing events force Lu Yanshi to make the most absurd yet reasonable choice of his life… This film marks the first collaboration of director Zhang Yimou with Le Vision Pictures, and has been hailed as a labor of love by screenwriter Zou Jingzhi.
