The train moves slowly forward with memories as she returns to her hometown, which she fled due to war, wanting to take her grandmother, who stayed behind, but this time, she can't find a train to leave. When exile, warfare, hunger, and death force everyone into the brink of survival, and all that remains of her hometown are the shattered rooftops letting in light, what can possibly carry the longing and nostalgia? The director transforms the tragic events of war in the Caucasus in the 1990s into a personal emotional reflection on national identity through emotionally restrained imagery. Each poetic scene layers upon another, and we seem to wander alongside the characters through the mists of history and time, stepping into Tarkovsky's landscapes.
