In 1891, Post-Impressionist master Paul Gauguin had gained some recognition in the art circles of Paris but was frustrated by the hypocrisy and affectation of civilized society. His desire for the primitive world drove him to leave his wife and children and travel to Tahiti in the South Pacific, prepared to sacrifice everything in pursuit of nature, wildness, and a pure environment for life and creation. Enduring economic hardship and spiritual loneliness, Gauguin ventured deep into the jungle, meeting the local Māori and encountering the indigenous girl Tehura; a triangular relationship slowly began to emerge. This distant island seemed to be the homeland of his soul, and the vibrant characters and landscape lines here became his muse, inspiring him to create the most iconic masterpieces of his artistic career.
