Through the lives of two women from the 1960s to the 1970s, Varda constructs a feminist history. The story describes the 15-year relationship between two very different women. They both experience the famous quote by Simone de Beauvoir: "One is not born, but rather becomes, a woman." Pauline is a middle-class girl from the city. In stark contrast to her family's traditional conservatism, she leaves home at 17, determined to become a singer. Suzanne is slightly older, a rural girl whose lover committed suicide. She raises two illegitimate children on her own, with a third on the way. Despite having little in common, the two women get along well. Later, they are forced to part ways. Suzanne goes to southern France and establishes a family planning center. Pauline organizes a women's singing group to awaken people through their songs. Years later, Pauline and Suzanne meet again at a rally advocating for abortion rights. They return to their previous relationship.
