In 1944, Rome, the streets scarred under Nazi occupation. The German army ruthlessly hunts down the guerrillas defending their homeland. George Manfredi, the leader of the Italian underground resistance and an engineer (played by Marcello Pagliero), is pursued by the German forces. In a moment of crisis, Manfredi escapes to the home of his friend Francesco, where, with the help of Francesco's fiancée, Pina (played by Anna Magnani), he meets Father Don Pietro (played by Aldo Fabrizi) and asks the priest to deliver a large sum of money to the guerrillas. Francesco is arrested while trying to protect Manfredi, and Pina is shot dead. However, just when Manfredi thinks he has survived, he is betrayed by a girlfriend, and Manfredi and the priest are captured and imprisoned. The Nazis deliberately torture Manfredi in front of the priest, and the two ultimately sacrifice themselves bravely under the enemy's brutal torture and gunfire. This film is adapted from the original work by Sergio Amidei.
