Norwegian performance artist Morten Traavik's directorial debut, the documentary "Liberation Day," which took a year to produce, chronicles the band Laibach, who describe themselves as the most misunderstood group, as they visit what they call the most misunderstood regime for an incredible cultural exchange. In celebration of the 70th anniversary of the victory over fascism, the North Korean government invited the Slovenian industrial music group Laibach to perform in the capital Pyongyang during the Liberation Day celebrations in 2015. This groundbreaking band from the former Yugoslavia, granted permission to perform in North Korea, not only played their classic songs but also covered Beatles songs and the theme from the film "The Sound of Music." Known for their rebellious style and unique blend of humor and satire, Laibach also embraced local customs by wearing traditional North Korean attire and performed "Arirang" alongside a North Korean pianist. The entire performance took place in a peculiar, absurd atmosphere of high-contrast cultural shock, with surprising moments throughout the film, revealing the rarely seen mysteries of North Korea.
