Idi Amin Dada, the controversial ruler of Uganda in the 1970s. He led a military coup in 1971, aggressively expanded externally during his rule, and imposed a reign of terror domestically, excluding dissenters. A series of dictatorial measures rendered him infamous internationally. To salvage his reputation, Amin invited a French documentary crew to film his daily life and work. Director Barbet Schroeder did not create a glorifying piece; he removed large portions of Amin's speeches and focused more on his true character. The film caused a sensation upon its release but also enraged Amin, who demanded the crew reedit the film and detained French nationals in Uganda as hostages. This action shocked the world.
