This film uses the method of event recreation to depict a police shooting case in Dallas, Texas, in 1976. Director Errol Morris interviewed Randall Adams, the suspect sentenced to death and later changed to life imprisonment, David Harris, the habitual offender who testified against Adams, the Millers and Michael Randall, three witnesses from the trial, as well as the police, judges, and lawyers involved in the case's investigation and prosecution eleven years later. Through different perspectives from various individuals regarding the occurrence of the case, Morris successfully validated Adams's innocence, and through a prosecutor in the film, named the police as the "thin blue line" that distinguishes a democratic society from a totalitarian one. The film's release caused a significant reaction in the United States. The Texas Criminal Court of Appeals overturned Adams's conviction. With Dallas refusing to re-examine the case, Adams was finally exonerated in 1989 and became an active social advocate against the death penalty. The film has also become a remarkably important piece in American documentary history, winning the International Documentary Association Award, the National Society of Film Critics Award, and being included in the National Film Preservation Board's preservation list.
