After a lonely funeral, Liesel unexpectedly receives her first book, "The Grave Digger's Handbook." This will be one of 14 books that bring her infinite comfort. She is a lonely child, her father branded as a communist and taken away by the Nazis; her mother subsequently goes missing. With the help of her adoptive father who plays the accordion, she learns to read. Despite the hardships of life, she discovers something more irresistible than food—books. She cannot help but start stealing books. Liesel, the poor girl referred to as "The Book Thief" by Death, struggles to survive in war-torn Germany and astonishingly helps those around her who are also suffering.
