A representative work in prison films, based on a true story. The unruly young man Robert Stroud is sentenced to life in prison. One day, a sick little bird flies into his cell, and with his careful nurturing, he manages to heal the bird. From then on, he dedicates himself to research in prison and becomes an internationally renowned ornithologist. During this time, he has to confront his overprotective mother and the brutal prison warden, yet he remains steadfast in his aspirations. Ultimately, his legendary story is passed down through the writer Tom Gaddis. Director John Frankenheimer interprets this essentially static story with a rigorous approach. Although it lacks the tension and excitement typical of escape films, the atmosphere remains tight and moving. Burt Lancaster fully captures the protagonist's temperament and emotions, while his fellow inmate, Telly Savalas, also delivers a memorable performance.
