Beatrice Hunsdorfer is a widow living with her two daughters in a bungalow in suburban Connecticut. She spends her days reading the classified ads in the newspaper, filled with vague hopes for her future, while she complains about the government and society. Unknowingly, she passes her disillusionment onto her eldest daughter Ruth. The youngest daughter, Matilda, shifts her focus to her schoolwork, disappointed with their home environment, and thus faces criticism from her mother.
