From: http://www.ilookmg.com/c002.asp?ID=107 "The Flames of War" begins with four main storylines: a German pianist who is deeply in love with music but becomes the commander of the military band when the German army enters Paris. He initially enjoys a beautiful newlywed life, but his musician husband dies on the frozen land of Russia as a ballet dancer. An American bandleader, originally a jazz band member, volunteers to go to the European battlefield to boost the troops' morale. A French Jewish female violinist, who is sent to a concentration camp with her husband and child, is the only survivor. Even years after the war ends, the scars of war still linger in their hearts. For them, the only chance of redemption lies in uniting these artists for a "Porte de Vanves" music concert. French director Claude Lelouch describes, in an epic style in "The Flames of War," how these artists from warring nations rise from the ashes. Although the characters are fictional, their experiences reflect real events from history: for example, the German pianist faced boycotts in empty concert halls when he performed in America after playing for Hitler; Russian ballet dancers fled to freedom at Paris airports, all these actual news items are depicted in the film. Only "art" can break human prejudices and barriers, which is the essence of "The Flames of War." Especially in the final "Porte de Vanves" concert, all artists from both sides of the conflict come together for a united performance for humanity's future, perfectly aligning with the film's original French title: "These People and Those People." When the film was screened in Taiwan, at the end of each "Porte de Vanves" performance, the entire audience stood in applause, a heartfelt moment that remains an unforgettable memory.
