U.S. Marine Corps General Francis (Ed Harris) is dissatisfied with the government's compensation and welfare for veterans and the families of fallen soldiers. He leads his men in smuggling the U.S. military’s latest biochemical weapon—the VX gas bomb—to Alcatraz Island, taking 81 tourists hostage and seizing control of the island. He threatens the U.S. government to pay a ransom of $100 million within 48 hours or he will kill the hostages and use the gas bombs to attack San Francisco. Alcatraz was previously one of the most heavily guarded prisons in America, difficult to defend and hard to attack. By chance, the U.S. government discovers documents showing that former British agent Mason (Sean Connery) successfully escaped from the prison, so they bring Mason in and ask him to lead a special forces team to seize the "devil's island" within 30 hours...
