In 1958, New York, Diane Arbus (played by Nicole Kidman) is an ordinary woman who knows only how to support her husband and raise children. Born into a wealthy Jewish merchant family, her parents run the famous Russek fur shop. Having lived a privileged life, Diane marries Allen Arbus (played by Ty Burrell), who is from a different social class, and she strives to assist his work in fashion photography. The harsh criticisms from her parents and the dullness of married life leave Diane feeling oppressed and lonely. One day, a new neighbor, Lionel (played by Robert Downey Jr.), appears in Diane's life. She is drawn to his mystery and begins to consciously pay attention to and explore everything about him. Unknowingly, her life quietly begins to change… This film is adapted from the bestselling biography of Diane Arbus by Patricia Bosworth published in 1984.
