The story takes place in 1930s America, during a time of booming economy and culture, when a man named Si Li (played by Woody Allen) suddenly appears before people. This magical Jew is found mingling in a variety of disparate social circles, of different classes and even different races. Every time he enters a new environment, he quickly embodies its characteristics, sometimes through psychological assimilation and sometimes through physiological transformation. The psychiatrists at a Manhattan hospital develop a keen interest in this peculiar patient, as does the general public, endearingly referring to Si Li as "the Chameleon." A plethora of culture and merchandise themed around him emerges, and for a time, Si Li becomes the hottest superstar of the era. However, the only one who truly cares about him as a patient is Dr. Eudora (played by Mia Farrow), a young and dedicated woman committed to curing his condition. Over time, a deep and sincere bond develops between Si Li and Eudora. Will this couple from such unique circumstances ultimately be together? Director Woody Allen portrays and directs, vividly and authentically recreating the life of the fictional Si Li in a pseudo-documentary style.
