In the 1940s, the shadow of war loomed over the world. In a mountain village in Japan, a middle-aged man, Kurokawa Kyuzo (played by Onishi Nobumitsu), enlisted and returned as a severely injured man, with limbs amputated, half his face burned, deaf, and mute. His wife, Shige (played by Terajima Shinobu), could not accept this reality and almost attempted suicide. However, Kyuzo was widely praised by villagers and even the government, hailed as a "living military god."
