In the 1940s, the shadow of war loomed over the world. In a mountain village in Japan, a middle-aged man, Kurokawa Kyuzo (played by Onishi Nobumitsu), enlisted and returned as a severely injured man, with limbs amputated, half his face burned, deaf, and mute. His wife, Shige (played by Terajima Shinobu), could not accept this reality and almost attempted suicide. However, Kyuzo was widely praised by villagers and even the government, hailed as a "living military god." Persuaded by the villagers and her relatives, Shige accepted her husband, who was now almost unrecognizable. The incomplete Kyuzo was oblivious to the changing tides at home and abroad, and his basic primal instincts became his urgent need. Even though Shige was unwilling, she still had to fulfill the responsibilities of a wife as much as she could. In this process, the fragile vanity of the "military god" and "the military god's wife" gradually shattered, and both she and Kyuzo faced the unavoidable pain deep within their souls... This film is adapted from the short story of the same name by Edogawa Rampo and won the Best Actress Silver Bear Award at the 2010 Berlin International Film Festival (Terajima Shinobu).
