The story takes place during the Northern Ireland independence war. British soldier Jodie (played by Forest Whitaker) is kidnapped by the Northern Irish Republican Army in Armagh, who attempt to use him to exchange for prisoners held by the British army. Guarding Jodie is Fergus (played by Stephen Rea), who feels lost and helpless about killing and war, empathizing and sympathizing with Jodie's plight, leading them to become good friends. The Republicans ultimately do not receive the prisoners in exchange, and Fergus is ordered to execute Jodie. However, Fergus secretly helps him escape. Before leaving, Jodie gives Fergus a photo of his girlfriend Dil and tells him he can find her in London. Unexpectedly, Jodie is accidentally crushed by a British army tank while trying to escape. Grown weary of the war, Fergus flees to London, taking on the name Jimmy. He finds Dil in London and is deeply attracted to her, only to discover later in a hotel that she is transgender. At this moment, the Irish Republican Army delivers news that they have sentenced Fergus to death and demand that he carry out a mutually destructive mission!
