The love of 16-year-old artist Artur is interrupted by the outbreak of World War I. After losing his mother and home, he finds some solace in enlisting, as this is the first time the Russian Empire allows Latvians to serve. However, the war is not what he imagined—there is no glory, no fairness. It is brutal and painful. As the war takes the lives of his father and brother, Artur is now completely alone. Moreover, the Russian army shows no progress in their promise to quickly resolve the war and return home. Only he cares about going back, while his homeland is merely a playground for other nations. With this perspective, Artur finds strength for the final battle and eventually returns home to start anew, just like his newly born country.
