Hélène (played by Delphine Seyrig) has recently lost her husband and has become a widow. Afterwards, she reunites with her first love, Alphonse (played by Jean-Pierre Kérien). The emotional pain and physical loneliness quickly bring Hélène and Alphonse together, as they believe they can find their former selves in each other. However, the mental pressure and inescapable reality soon reveal to them that passion and pleasure can only provide a temporary escape, and after the fervor fades, they must face a colder world. Bernard (played by Jean-Baptiste Thiérrée) encounters a girl named Muriel (played by Martine Vatel) by chance, and to his surprise, she ultimately dies under the army's torment. An angry Bernard seeks revenge for Muriel.
