The story takes place in a labor reform farm in Mississippi, where convicted murderer Bowles (played by Keith Carradine) escapes prison with a group of dangerous criminals he met while incarcerated. Fortune smiles upon them, and after a successful escape, Bowles and his companions go to a relative's house to lay low. There, Bowles meets a woman named Keite (played by Shelley Duvall), whose gentle kindness makes him fall in love at first sight. However, can Bowles, now a fugitive, really obtain the beauty he desires? After the escape, Bowles and his brothers, restless, commit a few minor robberies, which emboldens them. Finally, in another robbery, the robbers face a "Waterloo." While evading relentless police pursuit, Bowles seeks refuge at Keite's place, hoping she can offer him shelter.
