Paul (Michel Piccoli) and Camille (Brigitte Bardot) are a happy couple, and Paul’s career as a playwright ensures their financial stability. One day, producer Prokosch (Jack Palance) invites the couple to a meeting, where Camille experiences a dreadful feeling called "contempt" for the first time as she listens to her loquacious husband. Over time, this feeling intensifies rather than diminishes, to the point where she can no longer express deep love for her husband as she once did. Meanwhile, the handsome Prokosch captures Camille's attention, and they grow increasingly closer. When the affair is exposed, Paul erupts in anger, but Camille and Prokosch drive away in a luxury car without a care, unaware that a tragic fate awaits them ahead.
