Having bought an expensive cello and wanting to achieve a career, Kobayashi Daigō (played by Masahiro Motoki) experiences the devastating news of "the orchestra has disbanded" after four months of orchestral performance, along with the heavy debts from purchasing the instrument. Left with no choice, Daigō and his wife, Mika (played by Ryoko Hirosue), move to an old house and live a frugal life. One day, an advertisement catches Daigō's attention: NK Agency, which offers high-paying short-term work helping with travel. Daigō arrives at NK Agency for an interview, and without further ado, President Sasaki Ikuei (played by Tsutomu Yamazaki) decides to hire him but avoids discussing the job details. After persistent inquiries from Daigō, President Sasaki finally reveals: it is the work of a funeral director (in Japanese, Nou Kan)! Although Daigō has psychological reservations, the high salary leads him to accept the job. However, this type of work is not easy for an ordinary person; on one hand, dealing with the discomfort of the deceased, and on the other, having to hide his job from his wife and friends, Kobayashi Daigō's extraordinary career thus begins.
