In 1938, Madge Arwell saves an astronaut angel who falls from the sky while riding her bicycle home, and he returns the favor by granting her a wish. During the war in 1941, she escapes London with her two children, retreating to a country manor after losing contact with her husband who is fighting abroad, where she encounters a peculiar butler and discovers a large blue police box in a wardrobe.
