Former U.S. soldier Raymond Gaines (played by Dwayne Johnson) has transitioned from a life of battle to become a helicopter rescue worker for the Los Angeles Fire Department. Despite dedicating himself to his work, earning respect and trust, none of this can salvage his failed marriage. After a brief vacation, Ray returns to his post just as a once-in-a-century earthquake strikes southern Nevada, completely destroying the Hoover Dam. Shortly after, another powerful quake hits Los Angeles from San Francisco, and Ray witnesses the terrifying sight of a thriving city turning into ruins from his helicopter. At this moment, his wife Emma (played by Carla Gugino) and daughter Blake (played by Alexandra Daddario) are in different cities. To rescue the two people he loves most, he embarks on a race against time to save them...
