In 1949, Lao Zhao, who retreated to Taiwan with the Kuomintang and remained single due to the marriage ban, lost his roommate and comrade, Lao Feng. After death, a person becomes merely dust; Lao Feng's 1.8-meter body was cremated and placed in an urn only the size of a wine jar. The still-living Lao Zhao was not very happy either; he continued to survive in a small demobilized soldiers' dorm that was only four ping. The village chief followed Lao Feng's will to sort through his belongings at the dorm, intending to take Lao Feng's ashes back to his hometown across the strait in a few days. However, the stubborn Lao Zhao insisted that the village chief let Lao Feng stay for one more day so he could reminisce with his old brother. Unable to refuse Lao Zhao, the village chief allowed Lao Feng to remain. After a few rounds of drinks, Lao Zhao unexpectedly recalled the joyful memories of both of them with the beautiful A Feng. Thus, Lao Zhao decided to say goodbye to A Feng with Lao Feng and embarked on a journey to seek the last warmth of life.
