Laura (Penélope Cruz) returns to her long-lost homeland for her sister's wedding, accompanied by her two lovely children. However, amidst the joyful atmosphere of the wedding celebration, Laura's daughter, Irene (Carla Campra), goes missing. Soon, Irene receives a call from the kidnappers, who demand Laura to extract a ransom of 300,000 euros to spare her daughter's life. At this point, Laura reluctantly reveals her true financial situation; although others see her as a wealthy woman who has married into a prominent family, her husband, Alejandro (Ricardo Darín), has had his company bankrupt for some time. In her hometown, Laura reunites with her old lover, Paco (Javier Bardem), who even decides to sell his precious land to raise the ransom money.
