In the small New Jersey town of Passaic, where jazz master "Fat Waller" grew up, elder Fletcher (Danny Glover) clings to memories of the master while running a video rental store amidst commercialization. Young black man Mike (Mos Def) and the town's neurotic unemployed Jerry (Jack Black) spend their days in the store. Jerry recently feels that the microwave radiation from the power plant is controlling the town's residents and asks Mike to help him blow it up. However, Mike, tasked with looking after the store by the traveling Fletcher, hesitates at the last moment, leading to Jerry's failure. Unexpectedly, Jerry becomes the "Magnet Man," and all the videos lose their images due to his magnetism! Regular customer Miss Farrow (Mia Farrow) talks to Fletcher daily, and to prevent Fletcher from discovering the changes in the store, Mike and Jerry pretend that everything is normal. They are forced to start shooting their own films to fool Fletcher and the local film enthusiasts…
