In a hospital delivery room in Stockholm, three women who are about to give birth meet again. They are Angela (Harriet Andersson), who is aristocratic and snobbish, Egda (Gunnel Lindblom), lively and cheerful, and Adele (Gio Petré), gloomy and melancholic. Although they come from different backgrounds, they are brought together once more by the impending moment of childbirth. During the waiting period, memories from their youth come flooding back. These memories remind them of the complexities of love, the moral constraints of marriage that bind personal freedom, and the oppression by their husbands. At the same time, they ponder the fates and roles assigned to women in society. The story weaves between the present and memories, sometimes showcasing scenes of joyous banquets in luxurious mansions, and at other times immersing in the pain and helplessness of the delivery room. These scenes intertwine to present the various dilemmas and challenges faced in marriage and partnership.
