In 1929, Vietnam was a French colony, and a 15-year-old French girl (played by Jane March) was studying at a girls' boarding school in Saigon. Every holiday she would return home, where her mother ran a very small school with little income. She had two brothers; her older brother, Bill, was a drug addict and a bully, while her younger brother, Paul, was timid and often bullied by Bill. One day, as usual, the girl said goodbye to her mother and took the ferry back to school, where she met a wealthy Chinese playboy (played by Tony Leung Ka-Fai) in a black luxury car, the only son of a Chinese millionaire. The Chinese man was attracted to the white girl and struck up a conversation, and they quickly connected. At the boarding school, the girl learned that some students were engaging in prostitution, and she wanted to find a rich man as well, so she proactively conversed with him. After landing, they wandered around Saigon and ate Chinese food together at a restaurant, and he drove her back to school. The next day, as soon as school was over, the black car was waiting at the school gate. The two quickly fell in love.
