The story takes place in a nightclub called "Birdcage," where Albert (Nathan Lane) is the main attraction. Not only that, he and the club's owner, Armand (Robin Williams), are also in a same-sex relationship. One day, Armand's son Val (Dan Futterman) from his previous marriage comes to visit, happily announcing that he will bring his fiancée Barbara (Calista Flockhart) with him. While Armand is excited, he is also very nervous because Barbara's parents, Kevin (Gene Hackman) and Louise (Dianne Wiest), are conservatives. If they find out about his relationship with Albert, their son's marriage could be in jeopardy. Therefore, Armand starts persuading Albert to pretend to be a normal person. Though Albert outwardly agrees to Armand's request, he feels quite upset inside.
