The Romanian New Wave titan, Cristian Mungiu (with "The Intriguing Memorial Dinner," 41st iteration) takes on a high degree of difficulty again. The grand estate of a wealthy landowner hosts guests for an overnight stay, with a freezing environment outside and heated discussions inside. Amidst the food and drink, a series of dialogues unfold, debating religion, war, morality, and death, as perspectives begin to clash violently. Mungiu's signature long takes remain, as a few years ago he adapted the text of Russian philosopher Vladimir Solovyov in an improvisational manner for "Three Moral Exercises" (38th iteration). This time, he stays true to the original work, reconstructing the atmosphere of the era, examining character dialogues, and delving into the details of costumes and sets, thoroughly returning to the past tense of the text.
