Based on the book of the same name by Glenn Stout, the screenplay by Jeff Nathanson (writer of "The Lion King," "Catch Me If You Can," and "The Terminal") focuses on Gertrude "Trudy" Ederle, the first woman to swim across the English Channel. Ederle's father was a German butcher from Manhattan, and she was an accomplished swimmer who won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympics, which inspired her decision to attempt to swim the English Channel. In 1926, at the age of 20, Ederle swam 21 miles, successfully accomplishing this feat, a challenge only five men had achieved before her.
