The story takes place in Germany in 1946, just after World War II has ended, leaving the land scarred and families shattered. Handsome Colonel Lewis (Jason Clarke) and his wife Rachel (Keira Knightley) have lost their eldest son in the war, which has made Rachel harbor a deep hatred for the Germans. However, what she did not expect is that after the war, she and her remaining family would have to live under the same roof as a man named Stephen (Alexander Skarsgård). Stephen also lost his wife during the war, causing him to have a cold demeanor towards Rachel, and the two are often at odds with each other. The pain of losing their son leads Lewis to dedicate most of his time and energy to work, leaving Rachel with only Stephen to interact with daily. Gradually, their relationship begins to change.
