Will Francis (Jude Law) is a well-known architect, but his young and promising career does not translate into a happy family life. His wife communicates with him less and less, focusing entirely on their withdrawn daughter, leading to a lack of daily interaction among family members. Will's office is repeatedly broken into, and in his anger, he begins to investigate the thief, which leads him to meet single mother Amira (Juliette Binoche). The charming Amira is the mother of the thief, but Will is already deeply attracted to her. He abandons his pursuit of the theft case and secretly pursues Amira. Amira lives in poverty, shouldering the responsibility of raising and educating her son alone. Will gradually impresses Amira, and it seems that their lives are about to be restructured by this relationship. However, the deconstruction of life is not as simple as Will envisioned.
