However, a sudden disaster destroys everything; Eda unfortunately dies in a car accident, and the court rules the incident was caused by an act of God, relieving any responsibility. Yumikо harbors a deep hatred for the driver Shiro Mishima (played by Yujiro Ishihara), refusing his offers of apologies and compensation, enduring the pain of terminating her pregnancy and returning to her hometown in Aomori to work in her sister's inn to make a living. Mishima, having been reassigned from the Tokyo headquarters due to the accident, also loses his girlfriend of many years. Consumed by guilt, he regularly sends condolences to Yumikо. Soon, the two meet again in Aomori—one unwilling to look back on the past and the other hoping for forgiveness.
