July 4th is not only America's Independence Day but also the big day when mob lawyer Joe Morse (played by John Garfield) rises to power! Capitalizing on the public's inclination to bet on the illegal lottery number 776 (the year America was founded, 1776), he teams up with mob boss Ben Tucker to control the lottery results, intending to drive several underground lending houses bankrupt and monopolize the entire underground lottery business. However, his brother Leo Morse happens to be the owner of one of those lending houses. For money and fame, Joe is willing to coerce his brother into engaging in illegal activities with him. As he sinks deeper into the mire, will Joe be able to grasp the public's psychology, and can he control his own fate? The film "Force of Evil" uses a lot of real New York locations to depict the dark side of humanity in a big city through the story of illegal lotteries in just over seventy minutes. With strong cinematography and refined dialogue, the theme of crime, an indispensable element of film noir, is laid bare in the film. This movie has been highly praised by Martin Scorsese and is even considered one of the crime films that influenced him the most.
