This film is based on the novel by Andrew Michael Hurley, exploring inherited trauma and loss in a world ruled by supernatural folklore. Set in the English countryside of the 1970s, Richard and Juliette lead a pastoral family life, which becomes chaotic when their son Ivan starts to exhibit behavioral issues, creating an insurmountable divide between the once-happy couple. In their remote hometown of Starve Acre, archaeologist Richard is obsessed with uncovering a legend — an ancient oak tree on their land full of extraordinary power. As Juliette seeks some solace in the local community, Richard delves deeper into his excavation, and an unexpected discovery soon captures the couple's attention, while dark and sinister forces unknowingly enter their home, providing a disturbing possibility for reconnecting.
