In the eyes of her colleagues, Lucy (played by Renée Zellweger) is a decisive and strong woman, but also a manipulative person willing to do whatever it takes to achieve her goals. To Lucy, nothing matters, including her poor interpersonal relationships and barren romantic life, as long as she can succeed at work, she feels entitled to enjoy life. During an assignment, Lucy is sent to a small town in Minnesota; although she is reluctant to take on this "hardship," the thought of using this assignment as a stepping stone for promotion makes all the difficulties seem trivial. At first, everything in the small town feels dull to Lucy, but as time goes by, she finds that what she thought was unbearable slowly becomes endearing. Moreover, she meets a man named Ted (played by Harry Connick Jr.), whose presence leads Lucy to reconsider what she truly desires.
