During the first year of Qianlong's reign, on the birthday celebration, Emperor Qianlong played chess with officials at the Summer Palace and discovered that Shi Xiangxia and his senior brother Fan Xiping from the Hanlin Academy were the true masters of the chess world. Qianlong knew that Shi Xiangxia drew with him to maintain the emperor's dignity, and he wanted to see who was superior between Shi Xiangxia and Fan Xiping. After issuing an imperial decree, unexpectedly, Fan Xiping refused to comply and fled the capital to avoid arrest, taking a detour back home, leading to a story during his journey through Bianzhou. Fan Xiping stayed at a brothel in Bianzhou, and before he could settle down, he noticed a woman trying to take her own life nearby. He rushed downstairs to save her but during the commotion, a thief stole the agate pendant that Emperor Qianlong had bestowed upon him, which he had left in his guest room. At the same time, a mysterious man dressed as a businessman, who had been tailing Fan Xiping, also had 200 taels of silver stolen from him at the inn. The agate pendant and the 200 taels of silver led to suspicions between Fan Xiping and the man who called himself Wu Wenyu. After some suspicion, Fan Xiping's pendant was returned perfectly, while the thief only gave Wu Wenyu a bag of worthless stones. With no money to his name, Wu Wenyu could only force a smile at the inn, trying to stick close to Fan Xiping, who called himself Qi Wuji. Fan Xiping decided to win back some silver for Wu Wenyu at the Wuhu Chess Tower across the inn, only to discover that the tower master, Boss Sun, was cheating. Wu Wenyu's skills with the dice matched Boss Sun's, and both went upstairs to compete on the chessboard. While Wu Wenyu played against Boss Sun upstairs, Fan Xiping leisurely wandered in the chess tower, where a young man looking like a beggar insisted on asking him a "life and death" question about chess. Fan Xiping easily won against the young man, who called himself Sanbao. Sanbao, willing to bet and accept defeat, insisted on taking Fan Xiping as his master. Sanbao chased after Fan Xiping to the inn, and upon learning that Qi Wuji was actually the famous master, Fan Xiping, Wu Wenyu immediately revealed his true identity as the top disciple of the Caohang and his mission to track down the thief "Sai Shiqian," proposing a bond of brotherhood with Fan Xiping. Wu Wenyu and Fan Xiping became sworn brothers, while the girl disguised as a boy, Sanbao, secretly developed feelings for Fan Xiping. At this time, Boss Sun set a trap for Fan Xiping. Unaware of the scheme, Fan Xiping was tricked into letting Sun’s concubine, Yihong, take the agate pendant. Realizing he had been deceived, Fan Xiping decided to stage a con within a con to teach Boss Sun a lesson. In the scheme designed by Fan Xiping, Sanbao caused Boss Sun to suffer a crushing defeat. After teaching Sun a lesson, Sanbao left a strand of her hair as a token and left without saying goodbye. Fan Xiping bid farewell to Wu Wenyu, leaving Bianzhou with thoughts of Sanbao.
