In 1940, Disney produced its third feature-length animated film, "Fantasia," contributing a classic masterpiece to the history of animation that remains difficult to surpass. The film is composed of eight musical segments, the earliest of which, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," tells the amusing story of Mickey Mouse, an apprentice to the sorcerer Yen Sid (Yensid, spelled backwards from Disney), who steals his master's hat and uses magic to animate brooms to fetch water, leading to chaos. Originally intended to be part of the "Silly Symphonies" series, the project faced severe cost overruns, so Disney decided to combine it with several classic pieces of music into a collection of animated shorts for release. However, due to its overly artistic nature and the impact of World War II, "Fantasia" did not achieve the expected financial success. Besides Dukas' "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," the film features selections including Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor," Tchaikovsky's "The Nutcracker," Stravinsky's "The Rite of Spring," Beethoven's "Pastoral Symphony," Ponchielli's "Dance of the Hours," Mussorgsky's "Night on Bald Mountain," and Schubert's "Ave Maria." The film received two Academy Awards for Special Achievement (music and sound technology) at the 14th Oscars.
